What is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)?

Irritable bowel syndrome is a gastrointestinal (GI) disorder, meaning symptoms are caused by changes with a functional GI disorder that have frequent symptoms.

IBS is diagnosed when a person has had abdominal pain or discomfort at least three times a month.  IBS pain or discomfort may occur with a change in bowel movements.  You could have diarrhea or constipation or a combination of both.  Symptoms may often occur after eating a meal.

Studies have estimated IBS affects about twice as many women than men.
