Irritable bowel syndrome is a gastrointestinal (GI) disorder, meaning symptoms are caused by changes with a functional GI disorder that have frequent symptoms. IBS is diagnosed when a person has had abdominal pain or discomfort at least three times a month. IBS pain or discomfort may occur with a change in bowel movements.
